Viper has some very unique abilities that aren’t often utilized to their fullest potential. There are many one-ways you can find with your poison orb as well as some smoke screens to split up entire sites. Bind is also a very great map for Viper since both sites are already very isolated, meaning defenders are usually pretty split up as well. Learning the following spots for Viper’s abilities will ultimately allow you to surprise many of your opponents by controlling vision. Cutting off enemy vision allows you and your team better access to unique strategies that you otherwise wouldn’t have.
Understanding Viper’s Kit:
Maintaining Fuel of Smokes:
All of Viper’s abilities revolve around poison, and a couple utilize her fuel bar. While her poison cloud and toxic screen are activated, they reduce her fuel, which can be seen above all of her abilities. Fuel recharges after deactivating the abilities that take away from it. Learning to properly manage these is key to mastering her play-style.
Viper’s poison cloud, toxic screen, and ultimate all do poison decay damage to both teammates and enemies. This means that, while touching these abilities, teammates’ and enemies’ health will slowly be drained down to a minimum of one hp. After a player loses contact with one of these abilities, their health will quickly go back to what it was before.
Viper on A-Site:
One-Way Poison Cloud for Showers:
Viper has a couple of fantastic one-way smokes when defending on A-Site. These one-ways will be achieved via her poison cloud ability, blocking off enemy vision in specific areas. To begin, walk into the corner as pinged in the image above. Then look up at the doorframe that leads into showers.
You then want to find the intersection of the light and dark tiles next to the sign above the door frame. Make sure your lineup is the same as seen in the red rectangle above. Press left-click and the poison cloud should land right on top of the sign, allowing for a very nice one-way smoke onto showers.
This smoke cloud will allow you and your team to see any enemy players’ feet that walk across the doorway connecting to A-Site. Enemies in showers that are trying to look out toward the site won’t be able to see anything. Vision will be completely blocked for them, allowing you to either get free picks, or stall out the enemy’s push.
One-Way Poison Cloud for A-Short:
The next one-way is another poison orb that can be thrown before the round starts to block vision from A-Short attackers. Short is where most players that want to take A-Site will come from, as it gives the most access to site and areas around site like U-Haul. This smoke forces enemies to wait until Viper to run out of fuel or rotate to another area entirely. To begin, walk into the corner next to the two boxes as seen in the image above. Then turn and look in the direction of the teleporter.
Place your crosshair at the corner of the metal building as seen in the red rectangle. Left-click throw the smoke orb and it will bounce onto the other two boxes that are in A-Short. It’s worth noting that this is particularly good since it can be thrown before any round even starts.
Any enemy players that choose to walk up to far will be in vision of you or any of your teammates that are playing near A-Site or U-Haul. Enemies that die this way will often be less likely to push the same area again. If the enemy team does want to push through A-Short, they must wait for you to drop the smoke orb, giving your team valuable time to rotate and reposition.
Toxic Screen From A-Lobby to A-Site:
When attacking as Viper, her smoke screen can allow your team to push specific areas with much more ease, since important areas will be blocked. This smokescreen helps your team take control of site by blocking enemies that are playing in the back of A-Site. To begin, walk into the corner as seen above in A-Lobby. Then turn and face where A-Site is located.
Lineup the placement of your smokescreen as seen above, checking the map to make sure the line is exactly how you want it. It’s worth noting that there are variations of this smoke depending on the specific game and how you and your team want to attack the A-Site. Press left-click and deploy the toxic screen.
This wall blocks any enemy players that are playing in the back of site, and also heaven. Enemies in heaven with an operator can still position themselves to kill you on A-Short, so be careful. This does allow a Sage on your team to more easily walk up and wall to enclose the site.
Toxic Screen From A-Site to A-Short and Hookah:
This is a very unique smokescreen that not many players know exist. It will cover both A-Short and Hookah near B-Site to help a teammate playing there. It’s worth noting that this can also probably be done from Hookah, but the next few images will show the method from A-Short. To begin, walk up near the corner of the box as seen in the image above. Then turn toward the teleporter and B-Site.
Using your map to see exactly where the wall will end up is useful for finding the correct spot. Something similar to that seen in the two red rectangles above is most ideal.
As seen above, this smokescreen successfully covers both A-Short and Hookah, allowing for some pretty strong defense on both sites. Make sure to let your teammate(s) know on B-Site before activating it, as you might end up getting them in a worse position or even killed.
Viper on B-Site:
One-Way Poison Cloud for B-Long/Garden:
This one-way smoke orb is slightly harder to pull off and may take you a couple of tries to master and memorize. It will nicely cover any enemies trying to walk into B-Site from B-Long into garden. To begin, walk in front of this wooden rod as pinged in the image above. Then turn towards the door frame that connects to garden.
Aim at the spot exactly as seen in the red rectangle. It may help to use the line from the left side of the door frame, as the spot in the image is directly across from that. You then want to jump and right-click throw the poison cloud.
Once properly thrown, it will land on the ledge of the door frame. You and your teammates that are playing from garden will see something like the image above. Enemies pushing up from long won’t be able to see you until you can already see their bodies.
Toxic Screen From Hookah to A-Short:
This is another smokescreen that will cover two places and is very similar to the one shown from A-Site. However, this toxic screen allows you to play inside of Hookah with a bit of cover if you happen to be playing B-Site instead. To begin, walk into the corner in Hookah as pinged in the image above. Then turn and face toward A-Site.
Place your toxic screen similarly to as seen above, and attempt to cut off A-Short to successfully help your teammates playing on A-Site. Doing this before the round starts is ideal, as enemies will be put into a rough spot when attempting to push either of these two areas.
This smokescreen successfully fully covers the inside of Hookah as well as the entrance from A-Short. Make sure to communicate and ask teammates when enemies are showing near A-Site to know when you should activate this screen. Also attempt to play differently inside of Hookah, as enemies might begin to predict where you’re playing and spray through the smoke.
Viper has some very strong vision-denying abilities that work quite well with Bind, preventing enemies from getting information in specific areas. It’s also possible to catch enemies off-guard with one way smokes and get free picks. Communication is important with your other teammates when turning on your smoke abilities, as you could accidentally mess with a teammate’s plan for a specific round and even get them killed. Ultimately mastering these one-ways and smoke screens will allow you to surprise enemy players and win more games in ranked!
