Ascent is a map that often doesn’t get much love, due to how difficult attacking can be. Viper has some smokes and one-ways that can potentially turn a game around if you communicate to your team and play around them properly. Her poison orb one-ways will often allow for easy kills onto players that aren’t aware, and free stalling time for enemies that are aware. Her toxic screen is usually very good on attack for specific areas, as it splits up vision of places like A-Site and mid. Master these couple of abilities and combine it with good teamplay and you’ll have a much easier time climbing!
Understanding Viper’s Kit:
Maintaining Fuel of Smokes:
All of Viper’s abilities revolve around poison, and a couple utilize her fuel bar. While her poison cloud and toxic screen are activated, they reduce her fuel, which can be seen above all of her abilities. Fuel recharges after deactivating the abilities that take away from it. Learning to properly manage these is key to mastering her play-style.
Viper’s poison cloud, toxic screen, and ultimate all do poison decay damage to both teammates and enemies. This means that, while touching these abilities, teammates’ and enemies’ health will slowly be drained down to a minimum of one hp. After a player loses contact with one of these abilities, their health will quickly go back to what it was before.
Viper on A-Site:
Toxic Screen from A-Site for A-Main, Cat, and Mid:
This is a very good defensive smoke screen, as it will block three very important chokes from A-Site to Mid. Keep in mind this will usually affect two of your teammate’s vision, so make sure to communicate on when you plan to put the wall up. To begin, walk into the corner near A-Site as seen in the image above. Then turn toward cat and mid.
Proceed to pull your toxic screen ability out, and double-check its placement by glancing at the mini-map. Making sure it properly covers the entrance to both cat and mid is the main thing to focus on, as seen in the red rectangle above.
When properly placed, the poison wall will cover the three areas as shown above. Remember that activating this at the wrong time could easily put one of your teammates in a bad position or even killed. Ultimately look to use this wall to block vision when enemies could potentially be pushing one of the three areas.
One-Way Poison Cloud for A-Main:
This poison cloud may take a bit of practice of successfully pull off, as the place where you stand is very important. You will want to stand right around where I pinged in the image above. There is a brick that is a slightly different color that is a good indicator of where to stand before throwing the one-way. To begin, walk up to the mis-colored brick and stand directly on top of it.
Once you’re standing in the correct position, the next step is to place your crosshair somewhere on the bottom ledge. You will then want to jump and right-click throw the poison orb for it to land on the ledge.
This one-way is very good for catching enemies off-guard that are walking up in A-Main. This orb can also be activated if you suspect a fast A push, as it will slow down the enemy push and give your team to rotate and reposition.
One-Way Poison Cloud for Cat:
This is a one-way smoke that is very good for your teammate on cat, or even if you happen to be playing somewhere near cat. To begin, walk up against the right side of the door-frame. Then turn to your left and look near the bottom of the light.
Place your crosshair at the bottom right of the light as seen in the red rectangle above. Then proceed to jump and then right-click throw the poison orb ability. It should land on the top of the light.
After a few tries, you should end up with a nice smoke orb that blocks the entire entrance from cat. You will be able to see their feet and they won’t be able to see anything. You can tell your teammate playing near cat to call when they want you to activate it, as this will usually allow them to get free kills.
One-Way Poison Cloud for Tree Room:
This next orb can be thrown from the window that connects to A-Heaven. It will block vision and create a one-way for you to watch enemies walking into tree room. To begin, walk into the middle of where the window would be. Then face directly straight toward tree room.
Place your crosshair directly above the light as seen in the red rectangle. Simply left-click throw the orb, and it should land directly on top of the light.
The poison orb covers the entirety of the entrance to garden, making it very difficult for enemies from cat to cross to A-Site. It’s worth noting that you need to break the glass that connects to heaven before the round start for this one-way to be in position. Make sure you let your team know beforehand, as most people will play as if the glass isn’t broken unless they are told otherwise.
Viper on B-Site:
Toxic Screen from B-Site for B-Main, Mid, and Garden:
When playing B-Site as Viper, you have access to throw this effective smoke screen that covers B-Main, Mid, and Garden. To begin, walk up onto the ping as seen in the image above.
This is the location that the poison wall can be thrown from. Make sure to check the mini-map to see if every choke is being properly covered with the lineup. It’s also worth noting that you might have to aim a bit higher if you’re having a difficult time getting this wall to cover garden.
Similarly to the wall on A-Site, this wall can be very powerful when utilized correctly. It has the potential to stop or slow down pushes from B-Main, Mid, and Cat.
One-Way Poison Cloud for B-Main:
This one-way is similar to the one-way that covers A-Main, allowing you to see any enemies that cross from the right side of B-Main to the left. To begin, walk into the corner near CT-Spawn as seen in the image above. Then turn toward B-Main and look slightly above the door frame.
Place your crosshair on the red part of the roof between the blue tarp and the gray. Simply left-click and the orb should land on the right side of the frame, allowing you to block the entire entrance to B-Site.
After activating the poison cloud, make sure to be watching for enemies that are looking to creep up and catch you off-guard. These enemies will be free kills if you’re keeping a good watch of the area.
Viper in Mid:
Toxic Screen from Market for Market and Mid-Link:
This wall is particularly good for defending mid, since enemy attackers will very commonly play for mid-control on Ascent. This prevents attackers the advantage when peaking mid from mid-link, and allows defenders to get the jump on their opponents during a mid push. To begin, jump onto the box in market as pinged above, and turn to face mid-link.
Make sure the lineup for the poison screen is how you want it to be via the mini-map, and deploy the wall when satisfied.
As seen above, this wall blocks two crucial areas when trying to defend against a mid push. You can also plan to do something sneaky with your team and group behind one of these chokes to catch an enemy team off-guard. Make sure not to activate this wall if your teammate is using an Operator from Cat and is trying to peak early in the round.
Poison Cloud from Mid for Cat:
This poison orb is not a one-way, but is still incredibly effective at blocking vision from enemy players that are trying to peak from top-cat. To begin, walk up against the left side of the gray door frame, and face where the top of cat is located.
This orb may be a little difficult to land correctly at first, but after a few tries it should be pretty easy. Line your crosshair up in the middle of where the clouds begin to fade from blue to white, and simply left-click throw the orb.
This orb gives enemies near trying to peak from the top area of cat no chance to peak without going onto the two boxes to the right or walking through the poison cloud. This is particularly good on Ascent since Operators are currently very powerful for taking control of the middle of the map.
One-Way Poison Cloud from Mid for Courtyard:
This is a one-way that’s good if you and your team want to give more mid control to the enemy team and hold from farther back. To begin, walk into the corner near the the bottom of mid as pinged above.
Place your crosshair at the bottom of the line where it meets with the dark side of the curve. The line might be a little difficult to see in the image above, but should be fine when you’re in-game. Left-click throw the orb and it should land on the ledge of the arch.
This orb is great for holding from either market or pizza, and can also be done with another teammate to catch the enemy team off-guard. To better see under the orb, you will need to play a bit closer near bottom-mid.
One-Way Poison Cloud from Mid for Mid-Link:
This is a one-way that works similarly to the toxic screen that blocks mid-link. It can allow your teammate on cat to safely peak mid-link and potentially get some free kills. The only downside to this smoke is that it needs to be thrown after the round starts. To begin, walk into the middle of the door as pinged above, and turn to face where mid-link is located.
Place your crosshair above the light brown part of the picture as seen above. Left-click to throw the poison orb, and it should land on top of the right side of mid-link.
As you can see, the enemies will have very little vision and will generally be dead before they even have a chance to see you. This orb is great for teammates that are holding from cat with an Operator or rifle.
Ascent might be Viper’s best map in terms of one-ways and areas that she has access to smoke-off with her poison. Keep in mind that Viper has a timer on how long she is able to keep these abilities activated, meaning you should think about when the best time is to activate them. Also remember to communicate with teammates before activating either the poison cloud or the toxic screen, as you will have a better chance to win this way. Also, keep in mind that enemies may begin to pre-fire spots through your one-ways or smoke walls. This means you should always be swapping up your position and play-style as Viper, since she can be caught by smart enemy players.
